Improvisation to Composition

Improvisation to Composition

Week workshop
intermediate and advanced group

Floor work, Moving to/from the center (technique class)
Our focus will be to explore the movements incited from the center outward into the space, and conversely those outward movements penetrating toward the center.
We will seek to relax the muscles and make space in the joints while we are moving, let the weight pour into the floor guided by gravity.

The floor is one of the most important elements in relation to our movements. We will use the floor to discover different pathways through the body, and through the space. Space behind us, momentum in the movement, use of bone structure, releasing the body and natural flow of movement through the body are our attention points.

Improvisation to Composition

I will use my experiences in different fields to stimulate sensory awareness in relation to internal/physical and external/theatrical aspects of creating a performance. We will build our sensitivity toward movement and compositional choices right on stage, work in solos and group, developing our movement vocabulary and practicing to perform improvisation during the week.
From other hand, through a variety of exercises, we will explore our movements in order to make short phrases. By the end of the week, each participant will have a short piece of choreography. Everyday new elements will be introduced and explored in order to stimulate and strengthen our actions and movements.

Creation Process
working to ward the performances

Minimum Two weeks workshop
This workshop only can happen in a Theatre, school or institution with fix participants and
studio/theatre space with light equipments.

The aim of this project for the participants is to create a process for making their own work. One of most important points is: the participants have to make material on/for their own body and they decide how develop that and place it in the space. The inspiration, ideas and final direction must come out of each participant. The capacity to work in a playful and flexible way with others is an important point of the training. In the creative process, one might need to let go of original ideas and incorporate someone else’s solutions. My work is to advise and try to challenge one in a way that s/he maid not know from them self.
During the two weeks we will work on Floor Work (technique class in the morning)  and Contact improvisation (focus on performing) in the first part of the day. After the lunch break, in the first week we will focus on Improvisation to Composition and stage elements. In the second week, we have Work on choreography/ Individual guidance and Informal showing with group Feedback.

Floor work, Moving to/from the center

Our focus will be to explore the movements incited from the center outward into the space, and conversely those outward movements penetrating toward the center. We will seek to relax the muscles and make space in the joints while we are moving, let the weight pour into the floor guided by gravity.
Floor is one of the most important element in relation to our movements. We will use the floor to discover different pathways through the body, and through the space. Momentum in the movement, use of bone structure, releasing the body and natural flow of movement through the body and space are our attention points.

Contact Improvisation

Contact Improvisation is a partnering technique, which helps to develop the physical and intuitive strength of the body. It is mainly practiced in duet form, where weight is shifted, shared, lifted and supported by each partner. This technique explores the sensorial awareness of the practitioner working with the sense of touch, which is used as a media of physical communication between both members of the couple.

Improvisation to Composition/ Stage Elements

First week
Through a variety of exercises, we will explore our movements in order to make short phrases. By the end of the first week, each participant will have a short piece of choreography for in- or out-door spaces (if necessary we may work outside). Everyday of the first week, new elements will be introduced and explored in order to stimulate and strengthen our actions and movements. Some elements include: ‘images’ (video and slide projections), music or sound tracks, costumes and lighting.
We will capture our material as it is created on video and photograph (slides). Later these registration materials might function as part of the end result, as a prop, or as part of a performance.

Work on choreography/ Individual guidance

Second week

Each participant will have 1 hour 30 minutes each day to work on the material harvested from the first week (can be group or solo work). During this time, you will enter a process of developing the material into a short performance piece. You will need to think of location, costume, light, stage environment, music...Whatever elements are necessary for your work. The guide (workshop leader) will offer a variety tools to help this refinement process. In the second week, every participant get the chance to have Individual Guidance for their work-in-progress. During this time, we will think together of solutions and possibilities which help the process move forward.

Informal showing and Feedback

The informal showing is a chance to learn from each other, using the feedback we receive to develop our own work. Gaining confidence in showing what we have made, and becoming more confident on stage (be it street, theatre or location…) is an vital part of our process.
Giving feedback is not about judgments of good or bad, liking something or not. It is about articulating what we witness and defining stage elements in language. We endeavor to see the work through the eyes of the maker and give them our suggestion to lift the work to a new level.
Presentation/ performances on Friday and Saturday: for people who are interested to perform.
